Foundations

I've been thinking a lot this week about foundations. What is a foundation? It can be a lot of things. The dictionary says it's:

1.    1.  The lowest load-bearing part of a building, typically below ground level.
2.     2.  A body or ground on which other parts rest or are overlaid.

In this sense, we're talking about buildings, or structural foundations. Everyone knows how important it is to build your house on a strong foundation; otherwise you risk your house being damaged or unsafe. The foundation provides something sturdy for the rest of the building to stand on. You might say a building is only as strong as its foundation.

But that's not all.

Sir Dictionary has a third definition for us:

3. An underlying basis or principle for something.

A foundation doesn't just have to be under a building. It can also be the basis for a belief, a system, or a religion (among countless other things). It's the same basic idea as the foundation of a building, but it's not tangible. It provides the strength and surety of a belief.

So, you might ask, what is my point?

Well, I'll ask you a question:
What is your foundation?

My point is that a life is only as strong as its foundation.

In the Book of Mormon, we read that “…it is upon the rock of our Redeemer, who is Christ… that ye must build your foundation, that when the devil shall send forth his mighty winds… it shall have no power over you to drag you down to the gulf of misery… because of the rock upon which ye are built, which is a sure foundation, a foundation whereon if men build they cannot fall” (Helaman 5:12).

I honestly believe that this is true. I know of no surer foundation than Christ, my savior. There is no one and nothing more steadfast and certain of remaining strong than the Son of God. As I try daily to make Him my foundation, I notice how much more meaningful my life seems, and how I am able to remain true to the things I believe and want to represent.

Even if you aren’t a member of a Christian faith, having a strong foundation for your life and your values is imperative to staying true to yourself. If you don’t know where you’re going in life or what you want to make of yourself, I encourage you, whomever you are and whatever you believe, to find a solid foundation. Make it strong. Make it mean something. And stick to it.

That’s pretty much it. Time for a bit of gratitude!
